Find out who owns a hospital, nursing home or hospice

Referral tools, diligence teams, journalists and families comparing nursing homes ask the same question: who is behind this facility? One call per NPI answers from CMS's own ownership files, and says plainly that public private equity data is incomplete.

Plan
Needs the Pro plan or up

How it works

  1. Look up the facility's organization NPI (search providers by name and state if you only have the name).
  2. Read each facility's owners: ownership interests first, largest share first, with their flags.
  3. Follow upstream for owner organizations that list their own owners (depth 2 or 3 is usually enough).
  4. Show ownership_completeness with the answer: no flag never means no private equity owner.

The code

TypeScript with @healthcare.dev/sdk. Set HDEV_API_KEY to a free key and run it. Every response carries its source, release and license in meta.

TypeScript
import { HealthcareDev } from "@healthcare.dev/sdk";

const hdev = new HealthcareDev(); // reads HDEV_API_KEY

export async function whoOwns(npi: string) {
  const { data, meta } = await hdev.providers.ownership(npi, { depth: 2 });
  return data.facilities.map((f) => ({
    facility: `${f.organization_name} (${f.facility_type})`,
    owners: f.owners
      .filter((o) => o.role_kind === "ownership")
      .map((o) => `${o.name.display}${o.percentage !== null ? ` ${o.percentage}%` : ""}`),
    privateEquity: f.summary.private_equity,
    reit: f.summary.reit,
    chain: f.upstream.map((u) => `${u.depth}: ${u.organization_name}`),
    note: data.ownership_completeness,
    asOf: meta.data_version,
  }));
}

Or ask your agent

Connect the MCP server and ask in plain language. It calls get_provider_ownership and cites what it found.

Prompt
Who owns the hospital with NPI 1154392231? Does any owner up the chain disclose itself as private equity or a REIT?

Take it further

  • Flag nursing homes whose owners disclose a REIT or private equity firm in a referral list.
  • Re-check quarterly: CMS updates the ownership files every quarter.
  • Combine with the joined provider answer to screen the facility for exclusions and enrollment too.

Reference data only, not medical advice or a coverage determination. Send codes, NDCs and NPIs, never patient information.
