Model Context Protocol
Healthcare reference data for your agents
Nine read-only tools that map to what agents actually need: look up and search codes, resolve drugs, map NDCs to RxNorm and check NPIs. Every answer is compact, capped and cited.

Tools
What your agent gets
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|

| search_codes | Find codes by description or prefix, billable only if you like |
| explain_code_hierarchy | A code's ancestors and children |
| lookup_drug | An FDA product by NDC (any format) or an RxNorm concept by RxCUI |
| search_drugs | RxNorm and NDC search by name |
| map_ndc_to_rxnorm | NDC to RxNorm concepts |
| validate_npi | NPI format and check digit |

Provider lookup and search join with the NPPES dataset. Tool calls are metered like REST calls on the same key.
Questions
MCP FAQ
- What is the healthcare.dev MCP server?
- A Model Context Protocol server that gives AI agents read-only tools over US healthcare reference data: ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II, FDA NDC and RxNorm, with NPI validation.
- Which clients does it work with?
- Any MCP client. We document Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code (Copilot agent mode) and Codex.
- Do MCP calls cost extra?
- No. Each tool call is one API call on your key, with the same limits, quotas and pricing as REST.
- Can my agent send patient information to it?
- No. Tools accept public identifiers only, such as codes, NDCs and drug names. Never pass patient details to any tool.
