About the data

ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS

ICD-10-CM is the code set US providers use for diagnoses on every claim; ICD-10-PCS covers inpatient procedures. CMS publishes a new release each October 1 and, some years, an April update. Each release adds, revises and retires codes.

healthcare.dev loads every release, checks it against quality gates, and serves it with the release version on every response. Retired codes stay queryable with their effective dates, and as_of returns a code exactly as it was on a past date, so claims from earlier years validate against the codes that were in force.

Questions

ICD-10 API FAQ

Is ICD-10-CM data free to use commercially?
Yes. ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS are published by CMS and CDC NCHS as US government works in the public domain.
How do I know if an ICD-10-CM code is billable?
Every code has a billable flag. Header codes such as E11 are not billable; use one of their children, which the API returns from /children or /hierarchy.
How current is the data?
We load each CMS release when it is published. Each response includes data_version, and /v1/status shows when every dataset was last updated.
Can I look up a code that has been deleted?
Yes. Retired codes keep resolving with status, effective_end and, where CMS names one, replaced_by.
